Name
League of Soil: Using Augmented Reality to Engage Students in Soil Science Courses
Date & Time
Tuesday, June 23, 2026, 4:45 PM - 5:00 PM
Description

Soil science is an inherently field-based discipline, yet logistical limitations prevent students in soil science lab courses from visiting outdoor sites. Without being able to observe and engage with soils in their physical setting, students struggle to make connections between environmental features and soil development. In collaboration with the Digital Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) center at NC State University, we developed an augmented reality tool to provide an immersive, virtual experience to improve student learning. This tool was meant to replace the need for a physical trip to field sites while still providing a hands-on experience. We utilized various augmented reality techniques, including 3D imagery, 360˚imagery and drone footage. Students were able to view the virtual field-site visit in either VR headsets or on tablets. The tool was implemented in Fall 2025 (n=105 students), in two introductory soil science laboratory courses (4-year and 2-year degree programs). Post-lab survey results demonstrated strong learning outcomes and high student engagement overall. A majority of responses to survey questions related to the experience were rated as “moderately helpful”, “very helpful” or “extremely helpful” to learning. The 360° soil pit imagery emerged as the highest rated activity: students consistently rated it "very helpful" or "essential to learning" for understanding soil horizon identification. Questions related to using the VR headsets received the lowest ratings. Technological and logistical challenges encountered during implementation of the tool will be discussed. Our results show that using immersive technology in soil science laboratory courses can successfully engage students and enhance student learning over the traditional in-classroom lab setting. Other soil science programs are encouraged to explore its use as a method of teaching important concepts when physical field trips are not possible.
