Description

Colleges of agriculture play a critical role in preparing graduates to enter a rapidly evolving global poultry sector, yet many undergraduates lack exposure to poultry careers and the intercultural skills required for workforce success. This practice-based presentation describes how a multidisciplinary instructional team from a land grant university and a non-land grant university collaborated to design a teaching innovation process that integrates industry-engaged methods to better understand and embed global intercultural learning into poultry-focused curricula. The objective of this work is to identify how interdisciplinary faculty teams can partner with industry to inform classroom practices that enhance student readiness for diverse, team-based environments. This work was conducted in three phases: (1) forming a cross-institutional faculty team with complementary expertise in animal science, global learning, agricultural communication, and teacher education; (2) engaging directly with poultry industry professionals; and (3) conducting a qualitative analysis of entry-level poultry job descriptions to identify commonly required nontechnical and intercultural competencies. Across these activities, the instructional team observed strong alignment between industry expectations and the need for undergraduate learning experiences that intentionally develop intercultural communication, adaptability, teamwork, and conflict-management skills. Recommendations focus on strategies for building effective interdisciplinary teams to understand industry needs, incorporate high-impact practices in undergraduate instruction, and meaningfully advance workforce readiness.
