Description

The Application and Knowledge of Plant Sciences capstone course has traditionally been facilitated by a faculty member with a terminal degree in a plant science content area. Due to a hiring freeze, budget constraints and other personnel issues, an agricultural education faculty member offered to lead the course versus it being cancelled. What resulted was a reimagined course for the department with career and workforce ready skills threaded throughout the course’s experiential learning focus. The Agricultural Education faculty solicited and organized peer faculty in the department to mentor students in small group research projects. The beginning of the semester focused on engaging the students with career and workforce elements. Students then explored the potential project concepts presented by mentors. Initially, students were hesitant in sharing responses in group discussions with leadership assessment tools. This changed by adjusting the prompts during the project management tool activities. O*Net website scavenger hunts were also intermingled with the previous Career Services prompted LinkedIn and Employer Review lessons. Team building exercises included discussions on how people learn and teaching philosophies. Industry guest speakers such as an editor for an agricultural publishing company helped students explore how to tell their story and how to conduct business with media outlets. Whether these students venture into entrepreneurship or work for a large-scale agricultural enterprise, students learned the basics of how immersive technologies can transport their audiences into the microscopic and complicated plant research realms not easily described with only words. The students’ final presentations exhibited many of their new skills and technology techniques. Course feedback surveys included numerous positive comments about demonstrating problem solving with plant science knowledge and skills as well as how to navigate challenges of teamwork and a readiness for the workplace.
