Over recent years, there has been an increase in online degree programs and online education. For students who are unable and/or choose not to complete a degree at a college or university in the traditional, on-campus format, online degree programs are a valuable option. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore the reasons or factors that influenced students to pursue a degree in a 100% online format. Ten undergraduate students enrolled a 100% online agriculture degree program, two faculty members that have experience teaching online agriculture courses, and two administrators with involvement in the planning, development, and implementation of online degree programs at a college or university were the population for this study. Semi-structured interviews with questions designed to capture the reflections, experiences, and perspectives of the participants regarding online degree programs and online education functioned as the research instrument for this study. As the study progressed, themes emerged regarding the reasons or factors that influenced students to pursue their degree in an online format. Flexibility and convenience, accessible learning, lower costs, increased opportunities, an improved quality of learning, and the availability and variety of online program offerings were themes identified throughout this study. The data and information collected provided insight into why students chose to pursue their degree in an online format. This feedback may be important to individuals interested in furthering their education through an online degree program, as well as, colleges and universities interested in making improvements to existing online degree programs or in the planning, development, and implementation of online degree program options. Online degree programs and online education will continue to be a driving force in higher education as education continues to evolve with changing technology and the needs of students.
