Description

Agricultural Education, defined as a systematic instruction available to students desiring to learn about the science, business, technology of plant and animal production, and/or the environmental natural resources system, consists of three major components: classroom/laboratory instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs, and student leadership organizations (National FFA Organization, 2025). Student involvement in school-based Agricultural Education (SBAE) has been shown to foster an understanding of agriculture, improve leadership skills, and prepare students for a successful career. Additional research suggests that prior experiences in SBAE also influence students' decisions to pursue education (Park & Rudd, 2005), with Agricultural Education itself a subject area of rapid growth, increasing popularity, and a multitude of career opportunities. The population for this study was all 241 students enrolled in Agricultural Education at (et. school) during the 2025-2026 academic year. A survey was developed by a departmental student, the department head, and an associate professor to examine the correlation between student involvement in SBAE programs at the middle and secondary levels and an interest in pursuing a career in Agricultural Education. The dean of (et. school) and an assistant professor of the department reviewed the survey for validity before all departmental students received a link to the Qualtrics survey. The survey included questions about experiences in SBAE and SAE programs, agricultural strengths, National FFA Organization involvement, personal inspirations, and demographic information. The survey was open for ten days, during which 90 students responded, yielding a 37% response rate. The results indicated that 90% of students were previously involved in SBAE, while 10% were not, and 3% attended a school that did not offer SBAE. Overall, the responses highlighted varying levels of involvement in middle and secondary SBAE and indicated that prior experiences with all three major components influenced students' pursuit of careers in the field.
