Description

Using case studies is an effective educational technique for students to develop their critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. This approach to learning helps increase comprehension and strengthen content knowledge. The best cases are those developed from facts and real-life examples. In Kansas, improving the efficiency of corn production is crucial with rising concerns about water and input costs. Building the capacity of future generations to tackle real‑world challenges begins in the classroom. Three case studies were developed for high school and undergraduate students to analyze real data and explore questions related to irrigated corn production using results from the 2024 Testing Ag Performance Solutions (TAPS) program. This program yields a plethora of data that can be analyzed to help farmers make production decisions or used for educational purposes. The cases developed from the 2024 data include topics such as corn growth, planting dates, hybrid selection, irrigation, soil fertility, herbicides, and pesticides. The cases were written by an undergraduate researcher with strong agronomic content knowledge and guided by an agricultural education professor. The initial drafts were read by a content expert and pilot tested with undergraduate students. The final versions were shared with Kansas agricultural education teachers during a 50-minute workshop. Teachers (N = 28) worked through one of the cases and provided their feedback. They appreciated they were hands-on, applied to the real world, and the supplementals allowed them to dive into the content. They mentioned that the case may be better for upper-level or college students and there was not enough time to dive deeper into the data. The cases are ready for further utilization in classes focused on agronomy, irrigation, and related topics. Best practices for both writing and utilizing the cases will be shared to help others implement this effective pedagogical methodology in their courses.
