Description

AgriProspects is a five year USDA NIFA funded Adult Agriculture Workforce Development initiative designed to strengthen the capacity of the Cooperative Extension System to respond to evolving workforce demands across agricultural and food systems. The initiative emphasizes regional collaboration, systematic identification of workforce ecosystem gaps, and the development of adaptive, skills-based strategies that support workforce entry, re-entry, and advancement among adult learners. AgriProspects is guided by three foundational principles. Extension programming is intrinsically linked to workforce development. Discrete, transferable skills are the core units of workforce success. Learning acquired through diverse contexts has inherent value and should be formally recognized. A central component of the initiative is the AgriProspects mini-grant program, which provides competitive funding for projects that build workforce development capacity within and across Extension systems. In Year One, 11 mini-grants were awarded to support innovative Extension led workforce development efforts. Funded projects prioritize scalable approaches, including Extension capacity building, train the trainer models, industry aligned programming for producers and employers, and blended strategies that engage multiple stakeholder audiences. To date, AgriProspects has completed two rounds of mini-grant funding. The most recent round supported five projects at 200,000 dollars each, representing a total investment of 1 million dollars. Upon completion of the grant period, three mini-grant funding rounds, each spanning two years, will have been implemented to advance adult agricultural workforce development through Extension. Collectively, projects supported through the mini-grant program leverage digital credentialing infrastructure, artificial intelligence education, and innovative Extension led workforce strategies. These investments position Extension as a critical intermediary in equipping adults with recognized skills and credentials aligned with current and emerging agricultural workforce needs.
