Description

Diverse activities in courses can assist with students further engaging with and learning course content.  Additionally, a goal is to promote creativity in the plant identification (ID) courses at Colorado State University (CSU).  In the fall 2025 herbaceous ID course, students were given an extra-credit opportunity to practice and apply their accumulated plant knowledge to create a mini-floral arrangement in a cardboard vase. Students drew a two-dimensional vase on cardboard, collected herbaceous flowers from the CSU Trial Gardens, and placed each specimen into pre-punched holes on the cardboard. Students were to label the specimens to reinforce ID knowledge and submit for points. Students were encouraged to consider design principles such as color, texture, and balance while creating their arrangement. Thirteen of the 50 students (26%) engaged in the opportunity. Students who completed the activity were asked to participate in a brief survey, to evaluate and assess the activity.  Ten of the 13 students (77%) completed the feedback survey. The survey used a Likert-rating scale (1 = poor to 5 = excellent) and students generally found this activity to be innovative and creative (4.9) and served as a fun educational tool (4.8). Students also indicated this activity was helpful for reviewing plant species (4.6) and encouraged students to apply information learned during the course (4.6). Eight respondents reported that they were able to be creative to a large extent through this activity. All respondents noted they liked the activity and eight recommended making the activity a regular assignment in the course.  Based on the student feedback, the activity will be implemented into the course as a formal assignment in the future, and potentially as a substitute for one of the plant quizzes.
