Name
Using Mixed Assessment Tools to Improve Modular Curriculum Design in Cover Crop Education
Date & Time

Description

Cover crop use among U.S. farmers has expanded rapidly over the past decade, with national acreage nearly doubling since 2012. While growing adoption has been observed on the ground, education on cover crops within university and college systems remains limited.  The National Cover Crop Variety Trial Project Education team designed a series of cover crop modules aimed to support expansion of cover crop content across agronomy and horticultural classes in the USA. Designed by agronomists and educators from Cornell University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Tennessee State University, the modules were intended to be integrated into multiple types of classrooms and focused on: (1) plant breeding for ecosystem benefits, (2) cover crop variety trial selection, and (3) introductory cover crop overview content.  A mixed-methods assessment process was designed that combines pre- and post-course student surveys to evaluate learning outcomes, with faculty interviews across nine institutions to assess perceptions of module alignment flexibility, adaptability and student support. This unique approach was implemented to understand both the learning capability of the modules but also to assess their ability to be integrated into existing lectures and content across the country. Our preliminary results highlight the interest and need for this type of content for educators and the impact on learning outcomes. Further, educators expressed how content would ideally be broad enough to apply to a range of courses, leading to planned content changes. Our approach provides a process through which other educators can utilize a mixed methods approach to assess learning and adaptability of new content.
