Description

The activity of hatching chicks in the classroom is often remembered as an exciting classroom event but is rarely initiated with long-term use in mind. The “Hatch-Out Program” was developed for teachers of elementary aged students to provide hands-on agricultural lessons. These teachers typically lack the level of literacy or needed resources needed to implement themselves. The program’s train-the-trainer approach shifts the focus to creating an agriculturally accurate instructional practice in the classroom, and a practical way for teaching professionals to engage with schools about agriculture without the physical presence of an ag specialist. The process starts with a conversation with teachers to discuss schedules, lesson plans, and expectations for animal care and husbandry. An incubator with fertilized eggs is placed in the classroom, and teachers are instructed on projects that guide students through tasks such as checking the incubator's temperature, humidity, and observing embryo development through candling. Specialists provide instructional materials, including presentations, worksheets, and activities, developed with educators for age-appropriate verbiage and methods, which stay with the teacher. The project introduces students to embryology, anatomy and physiology, poultry production, and poultry products. The project leverages students’ curiosity, novelty, and excitement to foster a learning environment that places agriculture as the driving purpose. The specialist’s involvement is at the need of the teacher, building the teacher’s agricultural literacy, skills, and autonomy for the future. "Hatch Out” provides specialists a practical way to extend their outreach, strengthen their community engagement, and increase agricultural literacy of teachers so they can then engage their students in agriculturally literate projects.
