Description

Research methodology is a key aspect of many learners’ training, and team science has been shown to improve translational team outcomes. Despite this, formal research training and team science skills are seldom included in program curricula, and training opportunities are limited. To address this gap, we have developed two online training resources focused on introductory research and team science skills.

In 2021, we began offering an online research training program: Research 101. The initial topics were based on experiences with research trainees at a variety of levels. These topics were subsequently discussed with administrators, faculty, staff, and students at our institution. Twelve modules were developed with research-related objectives, assignments, and pre-/post-module surveys. The assignments involved watching a recorded lecture or YouTube video, reading web-based, published, or reported content, and answering reflection questions.

Twenty-seven first-year medical students completed Research 101 during the initial year. As of February 2025, over 900 learners, including undergraduates, graduates, faculty, and international scholars, participated in Research 101. Evaluation feedback was overwhelmingly positive and suggested that additional modules would be useful to learners. Among those additional topics was a desire to learn more about team science. A Team Science Basics module has been included in Research 101.

Trainee needs led to the further development of a new asynchronous 15-module Team Science 101 course in 2025. The topics were derived from our Collaboration and Team Science graduate course and popular workshops and lectures requested by learners at the University of Cincinnati and other universities. The topics include: Team Science Introduction; Team Science Competencies; Lifecycle of Teams; Team Function and Dysfunction; Emotional Intelligence in Teams; Communication Styles and Teams; Active Listening; Diversity and Intercultural Issues in Teams; Team Charters; Conflict Management; Stressful Communications; Change Management; Leadership; Purposeful Networking; and Team Wellness. Pre- and post-module surveys bookend 15-25-minute recordings on each topic. Knowledge assessment questions and optional follow-up resources are included.

Team Science 101 dissemination will follow a similar approach to Research 101, with a focus on promotion within collaborative networks and workshops. This course is planned for release during Spring 2025. Select modules have already been integrated into training programs for Clinical Research Professionals. The target audience for this online training resource will include trainees at all levels who are studying translational science and others interested in Team Science or specific topics included in Team Science 101.
