What is modern education about? If you look at the typical curriculum it might be most obvious to conclude that it’s about memorizing and then using a lot of “stuff:” facts, principles, processes, and equations to get things done. But it should be more than that, and in fact, in antiquity, an equal emphasis was placed on character development. In today’s presentation we will explore several deeper dimensions that include the development of cognitive complexity, moral adeptness, interpersonal competency, and organizational coherence. These things can – and should – be included in the professional development agenda for both students and faculty. Imagine a culture of higher education in which the support of everyone’s ongoing development is woven into the daily fabric of working life and visible in regular operations, daily routines, and conversations.
