Are you curious about the impact of team-based learning (TBL) on your learners? Have you wondered how you might apply research principles to investigate teaching and learning effectiveness? Do you want to take your TBL innovations to the next level? This interactive workshop is designed to help you explore TBL practices in your own context and empower you to apply principles of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) to TBL.
SoTL is the systematic study of teaching and learning within one’s discipline, transforming educational practices through evidence-based research. It involves faculty engaging in systematic inquiry about student learning and sharing the results. As Pat Hutchings describes, SoTL means “faculty bringing their habits and skills as scholars to their work as teachers… habits of asking questions, gathering evidence of all different kinds, drawing conclusions or raising new questions, and bringing what they learn through that to… students’ learning.” By investigating questions about student engagement, learning outcomes, and instructional strategies, SoTL empowers educators to enhance their effectiveness and contribute to a growing body of pedagogical knowledge. In this session, participants will demystify SoTL by exploring Felton’s Principles of Good Practice and Boyer’s Model of Scholarship, both of which frame SoTL as a rigorous, impactful avenue for inquiry and professional growth.
Using the TBL format, participants will engage in readiness activities, collaborative discussions, team application activities, and guided individual reflection. To support TBL practitioners in their SoTL work, we’ll evaluate examples of TBL-focused SoTL projects and apply a structured template for designing and implementing effective studies. By the end of the workshop, participants will understand how to integrate SoTL into their teaching, identify initial research questions, and outline potential methods, setting a foundation for impactful, TBL-focused SoTL projects that drive evidence-based innovation.
