In this exploration of Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL), participants will use a combination of the Team-Based Learning (TBL) and POGIL methods to develop an understanding of POGIL. Participants will actively experience a POGIL classroom while exploring methods to improve student engagement. They will also experience strategies for enhancing student acquisition of process (21st Century) skills and identify components of the POGIL pedagogy that will enhance their implementation of TBL. POGIL is an instructional strategy that provides opportunities for students to develop both content and key process skills (i.e. NACE competencies) at the same time. POGIL classes and labs consist of small, self-managed student teams working on intentionally designed learning activities to master concepts. There are differences and similarities in the cooperative learning strategies of TBL and POGIL. Some of the key differences can be used to enhance the use of either method and strengthen the learner-centeredness of the classroom, improve acquisition of functional team and process skills, and bolster long-term learning outcomes and success.
