Workshop: Using Team-Based Learning to Compare and Develop Strategies for Supporting Novice Educators
Date & Time
Monday, May 4, 2026, 12:30 PM - 2:15 PM
Description

Novice educators often enter the classroom with limited preparation for the complexities of teaching. Institutional support varies widely, leaving many new educators to build essential skills informally. This interactive workshop uses Team-Based Learning (TBL) pedagogy to engage participants in comparing and developing strategies that strengthen the confidence and effectiveness of novice educators.

Participants will complete preparatory reading authored by one of the workshop’s co-facilitators, What Four-Year Institutions Could Learn from Marine Corps New Faculty Preparation. The article describes the structured and practice-oriented approach used at Marine Corps University to support new faculty. The Readiness Assurance Process will ensure that participants; individually and as team; understand this model as a foundation for deeper discussion.

During the application exercises, teams will draw on their own experiences across different stages of their careers and across diverse institutional types. Facilitated by a team representing a community college, a professional military education institution military university, and a public university, participants will compare institutional practices, identify effective strategies, and collaboratively generate recommendations for supporting novice educators. Inter-team discussion during the application exercise phase will allow participants to share the advantages and challenges of military-based programs alongside those of innovative public approaches.

Through highly interactive, team-based activities, participants from K–12 and higher education will contribute their insights to co-create a “start-up kit” of practical strategies that institutions can use to strengthen their support for new educators. This collaborative workshop fosters reflection, shared learning, and cross-sector understanding, resulting in a rich collective resource shaped by diverse professional experiences.
