Description

Background and Importance

Publishing peer-reviewed papers resulting from STEMM pathway and bridge programs has many benefits. Publications encourage thoughtful planning and rigorous evaluation of programs, which can be used to improve programs for future participants. Other educators and institutions benefit from learning about different pathway programs and the successes or failures of specific approaches. Additionally, publications serve as evidence of scholarship for academic promotions and grant funding for programs. However, publishing this type of research differs from the laboratory research in which most STEMM faculty were trained. As a result, pathway program would-be scholars would benefit from additional training to acquire the skillset needed for publishing outcomes of their programs.

Rationale

The panel seeks to fill this gap by providing actionable advice for faculty and staff in pathway and bridge programs who seek to publish their program outcomes. The panelists come from a diverse background and are highly qualified in leading such initiatives. They have recently published manuscripts about these types of programs and will bring expertise to engage the audience to discuss publishing STEMM pathway, bridge, and outreach programs. Additionally, each panelist has served as a journal reviewer and editor for this type of research.

Challenges in the field being addressed

This panel will illuminate the process of publishing peer-reviewed papers about pathway programs. The panelists will highlight the importance of designing the program to incorporate a logic model, short and long-term goals, strategies, and metrics. Choosing a framework or educational theory to conceptualize the program, specifying the program’s objectives, and developing and measuring programmatic evaluation are critical elements of the planning process. Applying for and obtaining Institutional Review Board approval is an important process to ensure ethical standards and the safety of subjects. Finally, choosing a journal and manuscript format appropriate to disseminate the project results is another key element of the publishing process. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask the panelists additional questions and will leave the session with actionable tips to turn their pathway program work into peer-reviewed, published manuscripts.
