Claire Ann Canning, BSc, MSc, PhD, PGCert Med Ed, is an Assistant Professor, Deputy Head Department, Assessment and Progression, in the Office of Education at Duke-NUS Medical School. Prior to this, she was a Senior Lecturer in the office of Medical Education at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She graduated from the National University of Ireland with a BSc. (Hons) in Biochemistry, and went on to do an MSc. in Medical Genetics and Immunology in Brunel University, UK. Following that she graduated her PhD in the field of Genetics in 2002 from the National Institute for Medical Research, UK. She did her initial postdoctoral research at Kings College London and moved to Singapore as a senior research fellow where she carried out research at the Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR).
She has spent the last 9 years focusing her scholarship and research in Medical Education, with a special interest in Assessment. She is the current Deputy Head of Department of the Assessment and Progression unit at Dune-NUS medical school. With an increased interest in Medical Education and Assessment, Claire did a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Dundee, and was awarded a distinction in Assessment. Claire runs multiple faculty development workshops in assessment in the medical school and wider university, including those on blueprinting, item writing (SBAs), standard setting and post exam psychometrics. Claire has been a facilitator on the Essential Skills in Medical Education Assessment (ESMEA) online and recently was an ESMEA facilitator at the Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference (APMEC). Claire has also led workshops on blueprinting and standard setting at the Singapore International Advanced Assessment Course (SIAAC). She previously held a consultancy role at the Singapore Ministry of Health in the Department of Postgraduate Training and Assessment Standards. Claire has published her research in international peer reviewed journals and has presented her assessment work at AMEE, OTTAWA, and APMEC conferences.
