Description
A growing body of literature has emerged that shows mentoring junior physicians and trainees can improve professional growth, work attitudes, team performance, and goal directed self-regulation. However, there is vast heterogeneity in academic health centers in terms of the types of mentorship programs and their implementation. In addition, there is often confusion regarding definitions surrounding mentoring. Indeed, there are important differences between mentoring, advising, and coaching both in terms of implementation and outcomes. In this session, we will discuss these differences and offer examples of each based on our experiences at a new medical school focused on development of health care leaders. In addition, we will discuss the role self-knowledge of character strengths plays in mentoring, advising, and coaching and tools that can help advance this process. Finally, we will solicit input from participants on their best experiences as a mentee or mentor at their institution.

Objectives:
  1. Distinguish the skills and uses of coaches, mentors and advisors in career development
  2. Identify individual character traits and how they might be applied to career development
  3. Practice coaching skills using common scenarios
  4. Explore best practices and strategies to move them forward in other institutions.
