Description
This workshop will begin with an interactive group discussion to identify key barriers to integration. Following a brief review of the literature on concept-based learning and knowledge organization, the remainder of the first half of the workshop will guide participants through the development of "integrated clinical decision" application exercises. This novel active learning strategy provides a structure for active learning classroom and small group facilitated sessions in which learners must concretely apply basic science concepts to make and justify clinical decisions. The exercises are applicable to early or clinical phase health professions education programs. During the second half of the workshop, participants will develop teaching analogies to help clarify the basic science concepts that were considered during the morning activities. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with their peers from other institutions and will display the best of their work from the day in a gallery walk. The session will conclude with participants returning to the identified barriers to describe how strategies discussed could be implemented at their schools to advance integration.
