Description
Successful promotion requires that medical science educators clearly document their scholarly teaching and educational scholarship for department chairs, promotion committee members, and other institutional leaders. The Committee for the Advancement of Medical Science Educators (CAMSE), a subcommittee of IAMSE's Professional Development Committee, has designed a toolkit for medical science educators that provides a structured approach to develop an educator portfolio to facilitate promotion. The toolkit includes practical materials with step-by-step instructions, specific examples, references, and other resources for developing a strong educator portfolio. The toolkit is particularly relevant for basic science educators to help them document scholarship in teaching, curriculum development, advising and mentoring, educational administration and leadership, and learner assessment. Working both in small groups and individually, participants will assess specific examples of educator portfolios, and are encouraged to bring their own CVs or portfolios to apply the toolkit to their own documents. This focus session is designed as a companion session to "Should this medical science educator be promoted? A workshop for institutional leaders, promotion committee members and department chairs."

Session Objectives:
  1. Provide a practical toolkit for educator portfolio development
  2. Assist medical science educators in advancing their careers by creating an educator portfolio that clearly documents their educational activities
