Description
Should this medical science educator be promoted? A workshop for institutional leaders, promotion committee members and department chairs.   Successful promotion of medical science educators requires that institutional leaders, promotion committee members, and department chairs understand how to evaluate the scholarly work and educational activities of medical science educators. The Committee for the Advancement of Medical Science Educators (CAMSE), a subcommittee of IAMSE's Professional Development Committee, has designed a toolkit for institutional leaders to help them evaluate educators using their own institutional criteria. The focus on basic/foundational science educators addresses the gap in the recognition of their scholarly teaching and educational scholarship, compared to clinician-educators. Participants will use the toolkit to evaluate the  scholarly teaching and medical education scholarship of sample education portfolios. Participants should come prepared to share their own experiences of evaluating peers and participate in a conversation about implicit bias within this process. This focus session is designed as a companion session to "I want to be promoted! A hands-on workshop for the medical science educators".

Session Objectives:
  1. Provide a practical toolkit for educator portfolio evaluation.
  2. Use the toolkit to valuate samples of medical educator portfolios.
  3. Recognize the challenges that can impact evaluation, and that evaluator objectivity can be improved.
