Description
Professionalism has been recognized as an essential component of health professions education. However, professionalism is often conceptualized as part of clinical care and is therefore generally not an integral aspect of the pre-clerkship curriculum in medical schools. But should it be?  What issues might be addressed? How might it look in pre-clerkship curricula around the world? In the first half of this focus session, an international panel will present how the learning of professionalism is integrated into pre-clerkship curricula in eight countries and explore the types of professionalism dilemmas that pre-clinical students might encounter. The panelists will share how such learning is tailored to the cultural contexts of their settings, the successes and the lessons learned. In the second half of the session, participants will join the panelists to consider their own experiences and the group will collectively develop a consensus recommendation on how to best incorporate professionalism in the pre-clerkship years of study.
