Participants will explore ways to develop effective, holistic programs for evaluation of pre-clinical teaching at their institutions. Holistic programs contain data from student evaluations of teaching (SETs) in context with other forms of information about teaching, such as peer reviews and academic portfolios. Such a program provides instructors with formative feedback on ways to improve teaching and provides program administrators with a more comprehensive basis for evaluation of faculty teaching. Persistent misconceptions exist regarding the usefulness of SETs, despite confirmed correlations between SET scores and learning. In this session, we will also dispel some of the myths of SETs so that they may be used as part of a holistic teaching evaluation program. Combined use of peer reviews and academic portfolios with SETs substantially changes the way in which SET data are interpreted
