Tracy B. Fulton has spent more than 20 years in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she has directed and taught in courses in the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry. In the Bridges School of Medicine curriculum, Dr. Fulton co-directs the REGulatioN (Renal, Endocrine, GI, Nutrition) block. She is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators and is the holder of the Academy Chair for Excellence in Foundational Teaching. During the design phase of the current UCSF curriculum, she chaired a working group to revise the school's competencies and milestones and chaired two working groups to establish an assessment system that emphasizes open-ended questions. Dr. Fulton is active in the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE), past secretary for the Association of Biochemistry Educators (ABE) and serves on two National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) committees (Test Material Development Committee for pharmacology and biochemistry and an Item Review Committee). Dr. Fulton is on the leadership team for the Aquifer Sciences initiative, a collaboration with IAMSE members focused on use of basic science concepts in clerkship clinical decision-making. Dr. Fulton has won numerous teaching awards, including most recently the 2021 AOA Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teaching Award, and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Health Professions Education from UMC-Utrecht/UCSF. Dr. Fulton’s research interests are in student and faculty use of basic science during clerkship learning and use of open-ended question-based assessment in the professional school setting.
