Bio
Edgar R. Meyer, M.A.T., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor who serves as the Assistant Director of the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences Program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, with an appointment in the School of Medicine, Department of Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences. In this role, he engages in one-on-one advising with graduate students intending to enroll in health professional programs to pursue careers in the health sciences. Many of these students are underserved, being from rural areas, and/or identify with one or more underrepresented minority classifications. He has experience teaching embryology, histology, gross anatomy, and/or neuroanatomy to medical, dental, physician associate, and nurse anesthesia students. In addition, he currently offers consultation services on inclusion and diversity projects with Cengage, one of the largest education technology companies in the world. He is also certified to teach Koru Mindfulness, and he has been certified as a master facilitator of interprofessional education at his previous institution, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He has completed the Seeking Education Equity & Diversity (SEED) program at UAMS, and he served on the team of facilitators for the implicit bias training sessions of the Office of Intercultural Education (OIE) within the Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DDEI) at UAMS. He served as Co-Chair of the DDEI Student Recruitment, Retention, and Engagement Subcommittee and as the faculty advisor for the Multiculturalism in Medicine (MIM) and Interfaith Dialogue Interest Group (IDIG) student-led organizations at UAMS. In addition, he serves as a member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA) and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) committees on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as well as an ally member of the Black in Anatomy (BiAnat) group which emerged from the American Association for Anatomy (AAA). He serves as a member of the Pathways, Programs, and Bridges (PPB) Special Interest Group (SIG) within the Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) within the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). He also currently serves as a member of the IAMSE Encouraging Growth and Advocacy in Gaining Equity (EnGAGE) in Medical Education Subcommittee and, more specifically, its Religious Diversity in Medical Education community of practice. During his graduate coursework, he also led the initiative in the formation of a pastoral services training program for students. These experiences have allowed him to advocate for the promotion of diversity, inclusion, and equity in his classroom, organizational, and professional interactions.
