TBL is a significant instructional method used in US and Canadian Medical Schools. According to the 2019-20 AAMC Curriculum Inventory Data (https://www.aamc.org/data-reports/curriculum-reports/interactivedata/instructional-methods-used-us-and-canadian-medical-schools), TBL comprised more than 2% of all instructional methods used across 119 schools in the Inventory. TBL has found a niche within medical education, since it provides a mechanism for medical students to learn and apply foundational content to the clinical arena. In addition, TBL fosters the development of communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills necessary for effective healthcare delivery. Active learning delivered through the TBL elements (collaborative learning, rich feedback, preparation) have a significant effect-size (ranging from +0.4 to +0.9) in systematic review of teaching and learning impact on outcomes. Part 1 will cover Fundamental Principles and Practices of TBL.
