Description

Purpose
Retrieval is the transfer of information stored in long-term memory to working memory. Retrieval practice (RP) has been well-documented to enhance learning. Currently, there is scant local evidence about whether MCQs or SAQs are more beneficial for RP. The objectives of the study are to determine if there is a significant difference in scores between students who used MCQs and those who used SAQs for RP and to obtain their perceptions about the utility of RP.

Methods
This quasi-experimental, cross-over study was conducted at SMC, JSMU, involving 350 second-year MBBS students. Participants were divided into Group A that practiced retrieval through SAQs and Group B through MCQs. The study was conducted in two modules, with Group A attempting SAQs in the first module and MCQs in the second, and vice versa. RP exercises were administered at the end of lectures by the Principal Investigator, with immediate feedback provided. At the conclusion of each module, a formative test of 25 MCQs was conducted to assess student performance.

Results
Results indicated that students engaged in RP using SAQs achieved significantly higher scores (Mean = 81.734) compared to those who practiced with MCQs (Mean = 70.978, p = 0.024). Student feedback was positive about RP and was seen as beneficial.

Conclusion
RP is beneficial for improving academic performance. SAQs were more effective than MCQs in promoting retention.
