Description

Purpose
Healthcare professionals must navigate an ever-evolving landscape of medical knowledge and technological advancements. To prepare for this dynamic environment, medical students must identify gaps in their knowledge and skills, take ownership of their learning, and seek evidence-based resources to improve patient care. Self-assessment (SA) plays a vital role in developing professional competence and is increasingly utilized in medical education as both a learning tool and an assessment method. It enables learners to identify their strengths and areas for improvement, promotes self-regulation, and cultivates a commitment to lifelong learning. In alignment with Kern's Model of curriculum development, we are creating the Lifelong Education and Progress (LEAP) assessment—a competency-based self-assessment dashboard. LEAP will integrate assessment data, peer feedback, and self-reflection into students' weekly routines, promoting positive learning behaviors and equipping them with resources to address knowledge gaps. By maintaining confidentiality, the tool minimizes barriers to seeking help, fostering an environment conducive to improved educational outcomes for medical students. For this project, we aim to describe the process for implementing the LEAP Assessment, a competency-based tool, to promote self-regulation, address knowledge gaps, and foster lifelong learning in medical students.

Methods
The LEAP Assessment implementation includes two steps: (1) Tool Design: Develop the SA tool, incorporating benchmark performance, reflective questions, competency checklists, video reviews, and appropriate feedback; (2) Pilot Testing: Implement with a small group of medical students to gather feedback and make adjustments.

Results
Once we implement the tool, we will assess its effectiveness through surveys, focus groups, and performance data, analyzing the tool’s impact on students' perceptions, learning outcomes, and changes in behavior.

Conclusion
LEAP empowers medical students by providing a structured method to accurately evaluate their progress and self-initiate action plans for improvement. The tool is expected to enhance students' learning experiences and support their professional development.
