Description

Purpose
Medical schools engage in a variety of approaches to meet academic missions. While most schools incorporate competency-based education in their curricula, a defined mechanism to assess students on these skills remains elusive. Métier means a craft that one particularly excels at. A Métier-focused curriculum proposes a de-emphasis of basic science-based content in day-to-day activities and a reallocation of this time toward all other core competencies. We aimed to assess students' interest in this curricular proposal and understand how students would adjust their focus.

Methods
Students at our institution were anonymously surveyed utilizing Microsoft Forms. 46 students completed enrolled were surveyed with a response rate of 29% (n=160).

Results
Students were split on the support for a Métier-curricular model with 54% in favor of the curricular changes and 46% preferring the current system. Students indicated a change to this structure would make them more or significantly more likely to engage in career-essential activities including research (81%), community service (85%), and free health clinic volunteering (83%). 39% indicated they would take advantage of dual degree options with 37% indicating an increased inclination to complete an MBA degree. Interestingly, 72% reported a Métier curriculum would induce more stress compared to classic curricular models.

Conclusions
Our findings suggest mixed sentiment on a career-focused pre-clerkship curricular model. While survey findings show students are more likely to incorporate key career experiences in their weekly routine, the shift from basic science to career skills also is viewed to induce higher levels of stress. Our findings suggest a need for a robust advisor system for successful adaptation of a Métier-driven curriculum. We aim to further elucidate student concerns through focus sessions.
