Purpose
This project explores how a faculty development program at a higher education institution can foster a growth mindset among medical educators. A growth mindset recognizes that abilities can be developed through effort, learning, and resilience, making it a valuable tool for enhancing teaching practices and improving student outcomes in medical education.
Methods
A mixed-methods approach was used to analyze the integration of growth mindset principles within the program. Data was collected by interviewing faculty; surveying facilitators, former participants, and administrators to measure mindset attributes; observing sessions; and reviewing documents from the program. Focus areas included reflective practice, collaborative activities, and growth mindset language used by facilitators.
Results
Though growth mindset principles were not always explicitly stated, facilitators incorporated reflective exercises and encouraged collaborative learning. Survey results showed a strong tendency towards a growth mindset in the areas of clinical reasoning, intelligence, compassion, and moral character, suggesting participants embrace the idea of a growth mindset; however, intermediate mindsets observed to a lesser extent indicate some participants have mixed views related to mindset. Though minimal, fixed mindsets were also noted in areas such as moral character, and identifying opportunities for targeted interventions in specific domains. DISCUSSION Embedding explicit growth mindset strategies in the certificate program for medical educators can foster a supportive environment for faculty and students. Enhancements include incorporating reflective writing tasks, real-life problem-solving activities, and differentiated instruction to address diverse learning needs. These strategies can help participants navigate challenges, fostering critical thinking and lifelong learning behaviors.
Conclusion
The integration of growth mindset principles within the certificate program in the medical education context offers an opportunity to enhance faculty development and positively influence student engagement and learning outcomes. By fostering resilience and adaptability in educators, the program can contribute to a culture of continuous growth and excellence in medical education.
