Description

Introduction
Clear and comprehensive feedback is required at all levels to produce strong clinicians and future educators. Learners often express a lack of timely, constructive, and actionable feedback as educators shy away from giving what they perceive as criticisms in person, yet share these concerns in written evaluations. It is vital to give this feedback in real-time so learners can work to improve themselves during each learning experience and advance in their professional development.

Methods
With a goal to move from a mindset of positive vs negative feedback to effective vs ineffective, we developed workshops to train medical students and providers to improve feedback given in the clinical environment. The workshops included both didactics with explanations and examples of effective feedback followed by practical scenarios and role-play for implementation of what they learned. We used pre and post-assessments to determine knowledge and understanding.

Results
In direct evaluation of the session given to medical students, we saw improvements in understanding effective feedback and in their confidence giving it. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Comments mentioned the importance of the session, hope that the session continues, and belief that the session should continue to be implemented widely to include residents, fellows, and faculty.

Discussion
A significant part of advancement of learners is now based on feedback received during clinical rotations due to focus on competency-based assessments. Our medical education community must adapt to this changing environment by training faculty and learners in formative feedback modalities. We hope to more widely distribute the resources used in this workshop to promote improved, more effective feedback amongst the Medical Education Community.
