Purpose
The University of California Davis School of Medicine (UCDSOM) and the University of Massachusets Chan Medical School aim to share best practices and challenges for implementing holistic admissions practices through developing an implementation toolkit and community of practice (COP), funded by a two-year American Medical Association ChangeMedEd grant.
Methods
After the US Supreme Court banned affirmative action, many higher education institutions desired equity-focused-admissions practices. In response to a similar 1996 statewide policy in California, UCDSOM developed a holistic admissions approach that has resulted in the matriculation of a diverse student body that mirrors the California population. During year 1, the team will leverage existing success at UCDSOM to promote ongoing development of these goals at UMass Chan. During year 2, a modular toolkit of resources will be developed and refined in a multi-institution COP to support the change practices of taking stock, preparing for change, and implementing and evaluating interventions that align with the local institutional mission and the goals of socially conscious admissions.
Results
Pre- and post-intervention interviews of students, faculty, and staff will be used for a deep dive into institutional culture, leadership goals, recruitment and admissions practices, and enrolled student experience at UMass Chan. This data will be used for toolkit design, and feasibility will be assessed in the COP institutions.
Conclusions
The COP-based approach offers regular, structured opportunities for feedback and process improvement from institutions that share similar goals for reform. Limitations include a wide variation in institutional missions, resources, and readiness for change which will require different interventions. There is a concurrent need for trauma-informed medical education reform to support students from diverse backgrounds post-matriculation. We hope to catalyze medical schools to assess their alignment of practices and policies with their institutional mission and offer practical tools to assist with implementation.
