Bio
Dr. Joyce Akwe is an Associate professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta GA, The clerkship director for MSM medical students, and an adjunct faculty with Morehouse School of Medicine.
Dr. Akwe obtained her medical degree from the University of Perugia in Italy and a master’s degree in public health at the University of Manchester in England. She worked for the World Health Organization for four years working on evidence in population health. She completed her internal medicine residency at Morehouse School of Medicine and then she served for a year as chief resident. After her chief year, she joined the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Health Care System (Atlanta VAHCS) Hospital Medicine Program where she has been working for the past 14 years.
Dr. Akwe is currently the Chief of Hospital Medicine at the Atlanta VAHCS.
She is the lead for Simulation at the Atlanta VAHCS, and Chair of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation, performance improvement, and simulation committees, she is a champion for Tele-ICU Implementation and inpatient medicine order sets. She has created more than forty order sets which are widely used by staff physicians and residents at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Her research focuses on clinical medicine, quality improvement, simulation, and medical education.
Dr. Akwe believes excellent patient care begins at the bedside.
