Description

Educators face multiple challenges when teaching. Depending on the subject area, they may not have received formal training on how to deliver content to students, design content, or align course content to pedagogical strategies. Working with instructional designers (IDs) in higher education settings helps bridge the gap between being knowledgeable regarding a subject matter and not being as experienced about how to deliver that content. IDs are trained in pedagogical design, writing measurable and meaningful course objectives, designing course content, developing course activities and materials, and working with a variety of stakeholders. Oftentimes, faculty members working in higher education settings are trained as subject matter experts (SMEs) in their field of expertise; however, they sometimes lack the knowledge behind designing and presenting course content in an engaging and relatable manner as they do not have formal educational backgrounds. When IDs and faculty members work together to create, redesign, and evaluate course elements (i.e., course maps, learning objectives, content sections, curriculum, course activities, assessments, etc.), powerful partnerships are forged. As a result, courses are stronger, built to standards, and provide students with memorable learning experiences. Using a workshop format, the presenters will use a crowdsource template to demonstrate how to create a lesson using the SME/ID partnership so all participants walk away with a lesson inspiring and encouraging middle and high school students to pursue degrees in agriculture or agriculture-related fields. The presenters will walk the attendees through each step of the SME/ID partnership process, assist them in curating and crowdsourcing content for a lesson they can all use as a lesson once they go back to their respective educational institutions, and demonstrate what the final product looks like upon successful completion of the SME/ID partnership with one completed lesson.
