The rising cost of textbooks have increasingly become a barrier to student success and learning. Open textbooks are an excellent tool to combat textbook costs while increasing the accessibility and inclusiveness of course materials. However, few open textbooks exist in agriculture. I propose an open textbook project scoping workshop through which participants will develop a coherent plan for leading the development of an open textbook for their course. Participants will be guided as they identify and discuss their leadership team, a project definition, an outline, tools to be used, project expectations, next steps, and additional considerations. The workshop will consist of a mix of individual work, discussions with partners, and group discussion. This scoping workshop will be based on "The Rebus Guide to Publishing Open Textbooks (So Far)", and will include examples from the workshop organizer's experiences during the development of multiple open textbooks for soil science courses.
