This is a program built upon reviewing the definition of professional ethic and how ethics must be established and defined vs morals. This presentation also dives into the recently defined issue of “Ethical Fading” and how unethical practices can be unknowingly introduced into and organization and the process of ethical fading can creep into an organization under the stress of operating in the current environment.

This is a program that reviews the current statutes and standards that apply to the practice of Professional Land Surveying in West Virginia.

This engaging four-hour program delves into the planning, execution, and outcomes of the historic 1923 survey of the Grand Canyon, led by Colonel Claude Birdseye and his team. At a time when only 27 individuals had successfully traversed the entire canyon, this survey marked a significant milestone in exploration and mapping. The presentation will explore the "who, what, when, and why" behind this monumental effort, shedding light on the role of the Chief of the Topographic Mapping Division of the USGS and the survey’s traversal through the Marble and Grand Canyons. Attendees will gain a deeper appreciation for the challenges and achievements of this landmark expedition.

Bio
Earnest "Mack" McCarty is a professional land surveyor and chief of the geospatial section of the Huntington District of the United States Army Corp of engineers. He is the former president and current vice president of the WVSPS. In 2022, McCarty was selected as the WVSPS Surveyor of the Year.
