Join us for ESME at IAMSE!
Presented Virtually October 11 - 22, 2021

The concept of combining a course covering the Essential Skills in Medical Education (ESME) with an international conference has proved popular. Successful ESME courses have now been run in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Australia. In collaboration with AMEE, IAMSE has been offering the ESME course at IAMSE meetings since 2006. However, with the pivot to convening virtual meetings during the pandemic, IAMSE decided to offer the course in an online format to IAMSE members this Fall, during the dates: October 11-22, 2021

With the increasing professionalization of health professions education, the need for faculty in the healthcare professions to have training in teaching is widely recognized. Whilst many institutions worldwide offer Diploma and Masters courses in medical education, there is a lack of accredited basic level courses. The ESME Course has been designed to meet the need for an entry level teaching qualification. ESME will be of particular interest to faculty who are new to medical education, or who have been given some new responsibilities or assignments relating to teaching. Others are finding the ESME course useful as a refresher course or update. The ESME@IAMSE course is designed to be specifically relevant to medical science educators.

The ESME Program is accredited by AMEE and approved by an international Advisory Board. It has been designed around a set of competencies that all practicing teachers should possess. These include: Effective Teaching, Skilled Educational Planning and Informed Assessment and Evaluation.

The course will include the following six modules:

Module 1: The roles of the teacher
Module 2: Outcome-based education and curriculum planning
Module 3: Teaching and learning principles
Module 4: The teacher’s toolkit
Module 5: Assessment
Module 6: Management and leadership

The core resources required for each module would include short video recordings and the relevant chapters in the 3rd edition of Essential Skills for a Medical Teacher.  Additional resources would include AMEE and BEME Guides and other reference materials.
