General Information
Through targeted professional development in key aspects of medical education, the goal of this program is to develop well-rounded medical education scholars with additional evidence of specialized achievement that enhances and supports career advancement. As a capstone, this program offers the unique opportunity to complete a mentored project, where participants receive individualized mentorship and access to resources that may increase the likelihood of presentation or publication of their scholarly work.
The program encourages proficiency in five content areas – curriculum design, teaching methods and strategies, assessment, educational scholarship, and leadership – that can be attained through a program of targeted professional development and mentored project development:
Prerequisite: Completion of an Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) Essential Skills in Medical Education (ESME) Program. Face-to-Face and Online Course options exist and will be accepted as prerequisite. A certificate of completion is required.
Professional Development: Completion of twelve hours of faculty development workshops that are targeted to each participant to assist with research project development. These activities must be discussed and selected with the approval of the fellowship mentors, and a short reflection is expected after the session to relate the learning back to the research project. These sessions may be completed either at an annual IAMSE, AMEE, or Ottawa meeting, or taken outside the IAMSE annual meeting.
Mentored Research Project: Completion of a required capstone project, resulting in educational scholarship, which demonstrates application of content themes. Participants will be expected participate in virtual small group mentoring sessions 3-4 times per year, along with 2-3 large group mentoring sessions per year. Participants are expected to submit the completed project as a poster or oral presentation to the IAMSE Annual Meeting or other international, peer-reviewed conference as approved by the fellowship mentors (typically completed within the first two years, but not later than three years).
