Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) is a hot topic in undergraduate medical education. CBME provides an outcomes-based framework based on the evaluation of observable activities or competencies. To adapt to this evolution in the assessment of learners, everyone involved in medical education will need to understand CBME's benefits and challenges as well as the crucial role of integrated technology and data systems. Session attendees will learn about the history of CBME including lessons learned from GME, explore CBME implementation case studies from institutions at varying stages of CBME implementation; and contextualize the discussion within the national conversation through projects including (1) Navigating Expectations following the Transition of STEP1: The NEXT STEP1 Project, and (2) Clinical Skills Assessment and Standardization (CLASS) Project. Specific focus will be placed on assessment and the need for data standards and innovative technology to implement CBME programs.
By the end of this Focus Session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the basics of CBME, why it is important, and its impact on technology systems.
• Examine the key technical challenges that a shift to CBME creates.
• Discover how different medical schools are applying technical solutions to the challenges presented by a shift to CBME.
• Adopt models of collaboration that will lead to successful implementation of CBME.
