The Team-Based Learning Collaborative (TBLC) invites educators to attend our 18th annual Conference on Team-Based Learning scheduled for March 14-16, 2019 at the Renaissance Tampa International Plaza Hotel in Tampa, Florida, USA.

The TBLC is a group of educators dedicated to supporting faculty that have implemented, or wish to implement, Team-Based Learning™. Previous conferences have drawn educators from a variety of institutions around the world that represent multiple disciplines, different contexts of teaching and learning, and a wide range of students, from secondary and professional schools to K-12 education.

Pre-Conference Workshops are scheduled for March 14, 2019. Pre-Conference workshop choices include Fundamental Principles and Practices of TBL, Creating an Effective Team-based Learning Module, Effective Mentoring for Educators, and a workshop focused on Furthering (Developing) Research related to TBL.

The conference itself will take place March 15-16, 2019, and will open with a plenary by Dr. Sheila Chauvin, Professor Emerita and Professor-Research (Gratis) at School of Medicine, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - New Orleans. She will be presenting a session on "Leading Successful Change: An Application to Establishing TBL at your School." Dr. Chauvin's plenary is sure to be an exciting start to our conference!

The conference includes hands-on workshops, oral presentations, and poster sessions. Workshops are organized according to interest and experience levels, and include the Fundamentals, Innovation, and Research & Scholarship tracks. Participants are encouraged to sign up specifically for workshops in a designated track, or according to topics that interest them. While Fundamentals sessions will provide attendees with the basics of Team-Based Learning and how to do it, Innovation and Research & Scholarship sessions will challenge attendees to further develop their skills or to collect/analyze/publish their data on Team-Based Learning.

Finally, the conference location offers a variety of fun possibilities for your free time.

Dr. Sheila Chauvin holds a Professor Emerita appointment with the LSU School of Medicine – New Orleans and continues her affiliation as Professor – Research (gratis), Department of Internal Medicine. Upon joining LSU Health, Dr. Chauvin was the founding Director of the Office of Medical Education Research and Development and the LSU Health Teaching Academy. She continued in those leadership roles until her retirement in 2016. Since retirement, Dr. Chauvin has continued to be actively and extensively engaged in health professions education through consultative and collaborative work across a variety of academic health institutions. Dr. Chauvin has 44 years of professional experience and is well- known for her expertise and achievements in educational research, teaching/learning effectiveness, faculty development, curriculum and educational program development, development and implementation of assessment and evaluation systems, educational leadership and change processes. Her academic background includes a Ph. D. with Honors in Educational Administration and Supervision (minor: Psychology) from Louisiana State University – Baton Rouge; post-graduate and certificate work in educational leadership and supervision at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, a Master of Education with Honors in Curriculum and Instruction (emphasis in learning disabilities and psychology) from Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana; and a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education and Elementary Education.

Dr. Chauvin is a member of the faculty for the AAMC Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) Program and teaches all the workshops in the series. She is currently a member of the Editorial Board for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) MedEdPORTAL: Journal of Teaching and Learning Resources. She also serves as a founding member of the MedEdPORTAL Faculty Mentor program and received the first Outstanding Faculty Mentor award. She has been actively engaged in the development and ongoing enhancement of MedEdPORTAL since its conception. From 2010 to 2016, she served as Associate Editor for the faculty development and assessment sections of MedEdPortal. Dr. Chauvin has also previously served as a member of the International Editorial Board for Medical Education and as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education. She continues to serve as a manuscript reviewer for a variety of academic journals, including Academic Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, Medical Education, Teaching and Learning in Medicine, Medical Education Online, and others. From over 600 manuscript reviewers for Academic Medicine, Dr. Chauvin was one of 15 to receive the Excellence in Reviewing award in 2011 and in 2012. She also received the Choice Critics award in 2012 for the journal, Medical Education.

Beginning in 2008, Dr. Chauvin and Dr. Britta Thompson created the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) certificate program. The first cohort was launched regionally in 2010, and in 2014, the program was expanded national-wide. Dr. Chauvin has led the development of the LEAD conceptual framework, curriculum, program, and assessment and evaluation components. As of July 1, 2017, the LEAD program is administered as a new national model by the AAMC. Dr. Chauvin continues to collaborate with the AAMC staff to facilitate smooth transitions, serves as a member of the LEAD National Advisory Committee, and is a core classroom faculty and faculty coach in this national program. She is also a LEAD Faculty Consultant for delivering the institution-sponsored form of the LEAD program.

Dr. Chauvin has an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations. She is invited frequently to consult and provide professional development programs throughout the United States and abroad. She has worked with colleagues at a variety of medical schools to enhance teaching and education and to create programs and activities that foster faculty development and successful engagement in educational research, evaluation, and scholarship. She has consulted with a variety of schools, academic health centers, and professional organizations to create and enhance Teaching Academies, centers of excellence in leadership and education, and leadership and organizational development and improvement, including design and strategic thinking and planning, and focused developments in teaching, learning, assessment, and evaluation. Colleagues often describe Dr. Chauvin as a teacher of teachers and a highly effective mentor. They cite her leadership effectiveness and adept skills for facilitating innovation, collaboration, and successful change and improvement processes. From 2016-2017, Dr. Chauvin consulted with the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce to develop and pilot a statewide Medical Educator Development program. At PennState Health, she collaborated with leaders in graduate medical education to develop an institution-wide continuous program and evaluation and improvement model. She continues to consult and collaborate with leaders at multiple institutions to explore, establish and enhance faculty development and coaching activities to support faculty interested in pursuing educational research and scholarship.

Over her career, Dr. Chauvin achieved extraordinary success in obtaining extramural support for a wide variety of research and development projects in curriculum and educational program development, faculty development as teachers, leaders, and scholars in education. Her work was supported by a variety of agencies, including the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, the Fund for Improvement in Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE), the Louisiana Health Works Commission and Board of Regents, and legislative funding in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, among others. With funding from the Louisiana Health Works Commission, she developed and disseminated inter-professional, simulation-based teamwork training to healthcare teams in multiple hospitals across the state and developed and established a statewide faculty development program in simulation-based education (2012-16). She was also the founding chair of the statewide Simulation Medical Training and Education Council of Louisiana, established by the state legislature in 2009 and served as chair until March 2016.

Over the years, Dr. Chauvin has been recognized by learners and peers. In 2001, she was inducted into the University of Florida Society of Teaching Scholars in recognition of her extensive contributions to developing the society. She received the 2008 AAMC Southern Group on Educational Affairs Career Educator Award and its 2010 Outstanding Presentation Award. She received the 2014 Master Scholar Award, the most prestigious award from the International Association of Medical Science Educators. In 2015, Dr. Chauvin was inducted as an Honorary Distinguished Educator in the University of Vermont College of Medicine Teaching Academy for her work in creating the Teaching Academy.
