Here at the City of Martinsburg we use GIS in a variety of ways. Initially, the City’s focus for GIS was the creation and tracking of utility networks, such as Stormwater and Sanitary Sewers. In more recent years GIS has expanded into most aspects of City management. The Planning and Engineering Departments have their own Maps and Apps, feeding them information about properties within the city. The Public Works Department has made use of basic measuring tools to make preliminary estimates for paving costs and has plans to use GPS tracking for fleet vehicles. And The city’s Stormwater Management Team is perhaps are largest consumer of GIS products. From desktop inventories of stormwater infrastructure to web based hydrological analyst tools, there are very few GIS tools that the Stormwater team doesn’t use. As GIS use expands within the city, we are excited to see what other WV users are doing and gain inspiration for future projects.
