In an effort to be a more inclusive and accessible conference, IAMSE has provided this guide for accommodations, options, and information for our attendees. If you have a specific accessibility question that is not addressed on this page, please reach out to us at support@iamse.org.

Please note that this list is not comprehensive and will be updated as more information becomes available to our events team. If you have any resources that may be helpful to your fellow attendees, please share them with us! 

The following answers were sourced from the Calgary International Airport, Uber, Lyft, and the official Calgary website. 

  • How do people using wheelchairs get from the airport to the hotels?
    • Accessible transportation options include:

  • Does your airport provide continuous skycap wheelchair service from the curbside, to airline counter, to gate?
    • Accessible curbside drop-off and pick-up zones

      We offer mobility or guidance assistance from the curbside zone to your airline check-in area or special assistance counter (for departures). Mobility or guidance assistance is also available upon arrival of your flight at YYC from the general public, pre-security* area to the curbside zone (for arrivals).
  • Does the airport have courtesy trams inside the airport to move people between gates and concourses?
    • Yes, he Calgary Airport LINK Shuttle moves people between gates and concourses
  • Is there an outdoor relief area for service dogs at the airport?
    • Animal relief areas are provided on the Arrivals level outside of the main terminal as well as in post-security areas. All domestic, international and U.S.-destined guests have access to post-security pet relief areas.

  • Are airport shuttles equipped with wheelchair lifts?
    • All YYC LINK stations and vehicles are wheelchair accessible.
  • Do your rental car companies offer vans or other vehicles with chairlift or stowage?
    • The Calgary International Airport has several on-site car rental companies, all with their own accessibility options and policies.

      Avis - At Avis, we strive to make everyone's rental experience as easy, safe and stress-free as possible. That's why, as a feature of our Avis Cares® Program, we provide a full range of products and services for drivers and passengers with disabilities. Our visually impaired passengers can travel worry-free. Just make an advance reservation, arrive with a licensed driver at least 25 years old, and you're on your way.

      Transfer Board: Enables easier wheelchair transfer in and out of the vehicle.
      Panoramic Mirror: Provides a much larger field of view for any driver.
      Swivel Seat: Allows the driver or passenger to turn his or her body in the car seat with limited effort. The swivel seat easily can be removed from underneath the person for transport.
      Hand Controls: Enables drivers to accelerate or brake using a hand-controlled device. Drivers without disabilities are able to drive the vehicle without interference from the hand controls.
      Spinner Knob: Allows the driver to turn the steering wheel with a full turning radius using only one hand.

      Budget - As part of Budget's commitment to meet the needs of customers with disabilities, our services* include, at no extra cost, hand controls as well as four assistive and adaptive devices – spinner knobs, transfer boards, swivel seats and panoramic mirrors.

      A full range of services:

      Transfer Board - Enables easy transfer from a wheelchair into and out of the vehicle
      Panoramic Mirror - Provides a much larger field of view for any driver
      Swivel Seat - Allows the driver or passenger to turn his or her body in the vehicle seat with limited effort. The swivel seat can easily be removed from underneath the person for transport
      Hand Controls - Enables drivers to accelerate or brake using a hand-controlled device. Drivers without disabilities are able to drive the vehicle without interference from the hand controls
      Spinner Knob - Enables the driver to turn the steering wheel with a full turning radius using only one hand
      Although many Budget locations carry these items as part of their regular inventory, demand can vary. Customers with disabilities – or their drivers – are encouraged to reserve assistive devices within 48 hours of car pickup. In Canada, please call 800-268-8900 for details and confirmation.

      *Budget cannot provide hand controls on every make or model of vehicle, and cannot confirm a reservation for a particular make or model of vehicle on any rental.

      Dollar Rent-A-Car - At Dollar, we want to make your rental experience as easy and convenient as possible. A full range of special services are available to both the Dollar customer and any member of the traveling party with physical disabilities. The basic services we offer are detailed here. If you need additional information or assistance, please ask a Dollar representative.

      Services Offered:
      Hand controls - At U.S. locations, cars equipped with hand controls are available at no extra charge. Reservations for cars equipped with hand controls can be automatically confirmed with as little as 8 hours notice at major airport locations, and as little as 24 hours notice at other major locations.

      One-way rentals of hand-control cars are permitted without any extra cost for the special equipment. However, certain restrictions and intercity fees do apply to all one-way rentals. Please check for details at time of reservation.

      Spinner Knobs - Steering wheel spinner knobs are also available at many U.S. locations to assist drivers who need them. Please request at time of reservation. Reservations for cars equipped with spinner knobs can be automatically confirmed with as little as 8 hours notice at major airport locations, and as little as 24 hours notice at other major locations.

      Accessible Parking - All Dollar corporate locations have designated accessible parking at car return areas. When returning your rental car to a Dollar location, you should inform the Dollar representative of any special needs, and they will direct you to the accessible parking area.

      Easy Access Bus - For Dollar customers using wheelchairs, our new Easy Access bus provides an electrically-operated ramp as well as two ADA* compliant wheelchair positions. Wider doors, spacious aisles, and waist high luggage racks are also designed to make traveling easier and more comfortable.

      Drivers for People with Visual or Physical Disabilities - Drivers for the blind or physically challenged who hold a valid driver's license and are at least 25 years of age may drive a Hertz car rented by the person for whom they are driving. Such drivers are considered to be authorized operators under the terms of the Hertz Rental Agreement. When reserving a car, you must advise Hertz that you are visually or physically challenged and that you will be renting a car and providing a licensed driver. You must also be present at the Hertz counter at the time of rental.

      Thrifty - At Thrifty, we want to make your rental experience as easy and convenient as possible. A full range of special services are available to both the Thrifty customer and any member of the traveling party with physical disabilities. The basic services we offer are detailed here. If you need additional information or assistance, please ask a Thrifty representative.

      Accessible Parking - All Thrifty corporate locations have designated accessible parking at car return areas. When returning your rental car to a Thrifty location, you should inform the Thrifty representative of any special needs, and they will direct you to the accessible parking area.

      Easy Access Bus - For Thrifty customers using wheelchairs, our new Easy Access bus provides an electrically-operated ramp as well as two ADA* compliant wheelchair positions. Wider doors, spacious aisles, and waist high luggage racks are also designed to make traveling easier and more comfortable.

      Enterprise - Enterprise is committed to providing a range of Adaptive Driving Devices for our customers with disabilities. Adaptive Driving Devices include hand controls, left foot accelerators, spinner knobs, and pedal extenders. Such devices are available at no additional charge.

      While Enterprise will use good faith efforts to satisfy requests for vehicles with hand controls, left foot accelerators, spinner knobs, or pedal extenders, as soon as reasonably practical, we may require up to two to three business days notice for vehicles equipped with Adaptive Driving Devices depending on the location of the branch where such a vehicle is requested. However, at certain major airport locations*, vehicles equipped with Adaptive Driving Devices may be available with as little as 8 or 24 hours advance notice. The foregoing timeframes are subject to delays beyond Enterprise?s reasonable control.

      Enterprise does not offer lift-equipped vans for rental. In many major US metropolitan areas, specialty companies offer vehicles equipped with wheelchair lifts and other devices for both short-term and long-term rental. Wheelchair Getaways and Wheelers Accessible Van Rentals are such companies and you can contact Wheelchair Getaways at www.wheelchairgetaways.com or 1-866- 224-1750 and Wheelers Accessible Van Rentals at www.wheelersvanrentals.com or 1-800-456-1371.Please note that Enterprise provides this information as a courtesy to its customers only.       Hertz - At Hertz, we want to make your rental experience as easy and convenient as possible. A full range of special services for physically challenged renters are available to both the Hertz customer and any member of the traveling party. The basic services we offer are detailed here. If you need additional information or assistance, please ask a Hertz representative.

      Spinner Knobs - Steering wheel spinner knobs are also available at many Canadian locations to assist physically challenged drivers. Please request at time of reservation. Automatic confirmation is usually available with as little as 24 hours notice at most major Hertz locations.

      While National will use good faith efforts to satisfy requests for vehicles with hand controls, left foot accelerators, spinner knobs, or pedal extenders, as soon as reasonably practical, we may require up to two to three business days notice for vehicles equipped with Adaptive Driving Devices depending on the location of the branch where such a vehicle is requested. However, at certain major airport locations, vehicles equipped with Adaptive Driving Devices may be available with as little as 8 or 24 hours advance notice. The foregoing timeframes are subject to delays beyond National’s reasonable control.

  • Are there Uber or Lyft car services that can accommodate wheelchair stowage?
    • The only authorized ride-share operators at YYC are Uber and Lyft.

      According to Lyft's website, they do not provide wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAV) in Calgary. They provide the following as an alternative:
      Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Calgary, This is a centralized service that dispatches the closest WAV taxi from Associated Cab, Calgary City Cabs, Calgary United Cabs, Checker Cabs, or Delta Cab.

  • Does your city have taxis or vans that can carry wheelchairs or scooters?
    • On-demand taxi service is an important transportation option for people who require special assistance to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device. On-demand service provided by taxi companies is different from Calgary Transit Access, which provides pre-arranged service to qualified customers (including those who use mobility devices).
  • Can I rent a van that has a wheelchair lift?
  • Does city bus service accommodate wheelchairs?
    • All of Calgary's city buses can accommodate for a mobility aid of the following dimensions:

      - Length: 122 cm or 48 in
      - Width: 76.2 cm or 30 in

      These dimensions include all accessories such as footrests, baskets, and trays. Certain mobility aids, such as four wheel scooters, may not fit because of their wider turning radius. Please ensure you check the dimensions prior to boarding.

  • Does city bus service accommodate electric scooters?

    • Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) are traffic signals that have audible equipment to assist pedestrians with visual impairment. Traffic signals shown on the map only include signals which the City of Calgary maintains, signals which are maintained by the Province of Alberta have been excluded.   • Are service dogs allowed on city buses?
    • Yes, service dogs are exempt from restrictions on animals on city busses.

  • How far is the closest hospital or walk-in clinic?
    • The nearest general hospital is the Rockyview General Hospital, located at 7007 14 St SW, Calgary, AB T2V 1P9. This hospital is 8.7 km/5.5 miles from the Marriott.

      The nearest medical clinic is the Mission Medical Clinic, located at 1111 Olympic Way SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0L4. This clinic is 90 meters/0.5 miles from the Marriott.
  • How does the Hilton's food service providers and the IAMSE Admin Team address individual allergies?
    • The IAMSE Admin Team provides a label on the back of attendees name tags that addresses their specific allergy or dietary restriction. 

All questions related to the hotel will be in reference to the Calgary Hyatt Regency, one of two choice hotels for the IAMSE Conference.
